Even though cells should be cultured without the addition of antibiotics or antifungal drugs, cell culture media are not only a perfect breeding ground for your cell culture but also for many contaminants, such as bacteria and fungi. In certain cases the addition of antibiotics is necessary (for unique cell lines or to remove already existing contamination).
