[IML002] Mitsuhashi and Maramorosch Insect Medium is specially used for the growth and propagation of mosquito cell lines especially Aedes aegypticus. It was originally developed to grow cells derived from Leafhopper. Subsequently, it has been used to culture cells derived from a number of insect species. IML002 needs to be supplemented with 5-20% fetal bovine serum. Lactalbumin hydrolysate serves as a source of free amino acids, whereas yeast extract serves as a source of vitamins.

[IML003] Schneider's insect medium has been specially formulated for the in vitro culture of Drosophila melanogaster cells and tissues. IML003 contains calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. It does not contain L-glutamine. The basal medium also needs to be supplemented with 5-20% of heat inactivated fetal bovine serum to supply the necessary growth factors to the insect cells. It can also be used to culture cell lines derived from other dipteran species.

Sucrose, fructose and several Kreb's cycle intermediates were omitted from the original formula. IML007 is a fully defined medium and does not require supplementation with insect hemolymph. Instead, tryptose broth and fetal bovine serum provide the necessary growth factors. This medium supports the growth of several lepidopteran cell lines including Spodoptera frugiperda. It is specifically used for production of baculoviruses in lepidopteran cell lines.
